DEVON CRICKET LEAGUE ROUND 2

1ST XI

The big one T&K 1st XI hosting their arch rivals Barton CC 1st XI for the first time since the merger.

Prior to the call of “Play” at the request of Harry Passenger, there was a minute’s silence for those T&K members who had passed away over the winter – primarily Roger Biddick and Brian “Pops” Latto.  Praise must be given to Hazza for instigating this when you consider he is still so young.

However, with regards to the toss, normal service was resumed, Barton won it and decided to bat.  Barton though were soon regretting batting first with Torquay old boys Shaun Needham and Nick Watkin (acting skipper) back in the pavilion thanks to Josh Thompson.  It was then left to spin twins Chris Kelmere (4 for 8) and Harry Passenger (3 for 14) to dismantle Barton’s batting – extras were top scorer with 17 followed by Adam Parker with 15.  Barton were all out for 86 in just 29.3 overs by 2.24pm.

With such an early finish T&K had to go out to bat before tea and had until 4pm under the rules to complete the run chase, otherwise tea would have to be taken unless Law 43 was applied.  There was a rare failure for Chris Kelmere – the snick behind was clearly heard.  However, as he has done so many times over the years, Tim Western anchored the innings with an undefeated 44.  Nathan Roux who only landed in the country on Thursday morning contributed 24 before Harry Passenger came to the crease and scored a quick fire undefeated 11 – a 8 wicket win by 3.48pm.  A NOTE TO ALL PLAYERS THOUGH – PLEASE GO LOOKING FOR BALLS THAT GO INTO HEDGE AS EVO WILL GET VERY GRUMPY!  SERIOUSLY THOUGH IF PLAYERS (OR SPECTATORS) DON’T, THE CLUB COULD FALL FOUL OF LEAGUE REGS AS OF 1ST JUNE.

Next up for the 1st XI, and you couldn’t make it up is an Aaron Printers Cup match this Thursday away to you guessed it, Barton CC 1st XI.  The 1st XI then return to DCL action away to Bovey Tracey CC 1st XI.

Barton CC 1st XI                                                        86 all out (29.3 overs)

N Roux                                                                       24

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 1st XI (20 pts) beat Barton CC 1st XI (2 pts) by 8 wickets.

2ND XI

Saturday was so reminiscent of the old days of the DCL when the 1st and 2nd XIs played the respective XI from the same opposition club.  So the 2nd XI nipped up the road to Torquay’s old ground, Cricketfield Road, to take on Barton CC 2nd XI.

T&K won the toss and asked Barton to have a bat.   Adam Last formerly of this parish top scored with 33, while Sreejith Sankaranaryanan contributed 27.  However extras also contributed 25 which ultimately proved costly.  It was certainly a day for caught and bowls with no fewer than 3!  The best of the T&K bowlers was young kiwi, Tobias Delahunty with 4 for 43.  Barton were all out for 149 in just 33 overs.

In reply despite losing Tom Lillywhite cheaply, T&K seemed on course for victory with Bobby Western scoring 43 and Faiz Ebrahim 32.  However, it was then step forward young Jack Shelton who destroyed the rest of the middle order and the tail taking 6 for 20.  As a result T&K lost by 7 runs with plenty of overs to spare.

It was good to see so many of the 1st XI nipping up the road to support the 2nd XI – this club certainly has the “we are one club” ethos at its heart.

Finally, T&K and in particular, scorer Sandra Western, would like to thank the “lovely man / woman” who uploaded the scores onto Play Cricket following some computer glitches.

Next up for the 2nd XI, next weekend will be to host Hatherleigh CC 2nd XI which will be either the 1st or last stop on the Ground Hop Challenge.

Barton CC 2nd XI                                                                                  149 all out (33 overs)

3RD XI

The 3rd XI played host to North Devon CC 3rd XI at Kingskerswell.

T&K won the toss and elected to bat.  Virtually everyone contributed with the bat.  However, the standout batter was Shrey Sancheti with an undefeated run a ball 70.  The best of the North Devon bowlers was Wes McKellar with 3 for 54 as T&K finished on 243 for 9 in their 40 overs (only 7 runs short of what would have been maximum batting points under 1st XI regs but 10 overs less).

In reply, North Devon lost wickets at regular intervals thanks to young Noah Carswell with 4 for 28 and Matt Rossin with 3 for 25.  The biggest contributor to North Devon’s score was extras with 45 (radar issues for bowlers the biggest culprit).  North Devon were all out 135 in just 28.2 overs.

Next up for the 3rd XI is an extremely long trip next weekend to Torre Valley North to take on Paignton 4th XI.

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 3rd XI                   243 for 9 (40 overs)

S Sancheti                                                                 70 not out

4TH XI

So the day dawned and the doom mongers were proven wrong – the 4th XI took to the field with a full XI.  Their first match turned into a tense thriller and but for the Rugby Club Dinner, they could have won.

Kenn CC 2nd XI won the toss and elected to field.  The star with the bat for T&K was Steve Waters with 57 not out (let’s hope he was in the chair afterwards) who was supported by loan player Sachin Joy with 48.  The best of the Kenn bowlers was Ben Parry with 3 for 34 as T&K finished on 184 for 6 in their 40 overs.

Kenn’s reply was built around the 68 scored by Tim McDonald before he was run out by Joseph Frost and 50 scored by Harry Scott before he was caught by William Frost.  The best of the T&K bowlers was the other loan player, Jibin John, with 4 for 24.  However. Kenn reached the required total with 3.3 overs remaining but with just 1 wicket in-hand.  A promising start for the 4th XI though under the leadership of Ollie Smith.

Next up for 4th XI is their first home fixture next weekend against Babbacombe CC 3rd XI who could easily be known as Devon Dumpling CC!

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 4th XI                   184 for 6 (40 overs)

S Waters                                                                     57 not out

J John                                                                         4-24

Kenn CC 2nd XI (17 pts) beat Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 4th XI (8 pts) by 1 wicket

Player of the Day

Not such an easy one this with so man candidates but it goes to Shrey Sancheti for his undefeated 70,

Spectator Watch

Well where do you start!  Camp Kelmere was expanded with the Shergold’s in residence, let’s hope the result might tempt Rob out of retirement.  Life Vice President, Ian Hayman and his daughter Mel was also present, both of whom were heavily involved with TUFC until recently – it was nice to see Mel back to her bubbly self after the vile attacks she suffered on social media.  Continuing on the TUFC theme, Paul Osborn, dad of Neal who played for both clubs also made a rare appearance.  Finally, there was Colin Davey, who was Evo’s first skipper when he started scoring for the 2nd XI back in 1986 – he has a lot to answer for!  One noticeable absentee though was “Captain Panic” aka John Morgan.  Evo has been reliably informed he had decided to go fishing with a certain Matt Hunt!
