DEVON CRICKET LEAGUE 2026 - ROUND 6

1ST XI

The 1st XI played host to Budleigh Salterton CC 1st XI in the only match which survived in the A Division.

With the match reduced to 24 overs per side and with rain still around, on winning the toss, Budleigh Salterton not unsurprisingly asked TKCC to have a bat.  As a result of the reduced overs, Ed Smout-Cooper was moved up to open with Josh Thompson.  However this proved unsuccessful as Jack England, who currently resides in Nut Bush Lane, claimed both Smout-Cooper and Ben Pomare cheaply.  The early damage though was successfully repaired by Chris Kelmere on his seasonal league debut with 37 and leading from the front, Harry Passenger, with 52.  It would certainly have been interesting if Harry Baxendale had got the video camera working as both Kelmere’s and Josh Hunt’s wickets were close to being called for No Ball on height.  Jack England was the best of Budleigh Salterton bowlers with 3 for 26 as TKCC finished on 177 for 8 in their 24 overs.

Ed Doble got Budleigh Salterton off to a quick start before falling for 19 – caught behind by Ben Pomare off the bowling of James Tyler.  One of the 6s he hit off he had hit off Tyler threw up an interesting point.  In a reduced match should the 5 over rule for a replacement new ball if the original is lost be prorated?  Well as it stands if the match was 20 overs and the ball was lost over 4.5 overs the bowling side could get a new ball having already bowled 25% of their overs.  On Derby Day, the Budleigh Salterton batters with the exceptions of Lloyd Murrin (30) and Luke Davies (28) they weren’t really at the races and only managed to score 131 for the loss of 7 wickets in their 24 overs – Passenger’s insistence to play paid off.   The wickets were shared by the TKCC bowlers, Chris Kelmere (2 for 18), Harry Baxendale (2 for 21 which included the only maiden of the match) and James Tyler (2 for 38).  It was noted that despite losing, several of the Budleigh Salterton followed cricket etiquette and came over to the scorebox to thank both scorers.

Next up for the 1st XI is back-to-back fixtures in East Devon.  First up next Saturday in the DCL a trip to take on Heathcoat CC 1st XI – a club still recovering from the terrible fire which destroyed their pavilion.  Next day in the DSC a trip to take on the reigning champions, Exmouth CC 1st XI with a 13:00 start (the write up on the Saturday matches might be delayed as a result, especially as Evo freely admits he is triggering fairly badly at the moment).

2ND XI

The 2nd XI didn’t even travel to take on Yelverton Bohemians CC 1st XI so 8 pts each.

Before their home fixture in the DCL next Saturday hosting Ipplepen CC 2nd XI the 2nd XI should have been in action at home against Abbotskerswell CC 2nd XI  in the Ivor Dewdney Corinithian Cup tomorrow (Sunday) but Abbotskerswell conceded – a case of who blinked first!  Next round they will be away to Sidmouth CC 2nd XI.

3RD XI

The 3rd XI called it early to stop Honiton CC 2nd XI having a wasted journey so 8 pts each.

Next up for the 3rd XI is a trip next weekend to take on Abbotskerswell CC 3rd XI at Stover School.

4TH XI

So, the 4th XI didn’t need their passports today as Tavistock cc 3rd XI called it off early to stop a wasted trip over the Tamar so 8 pts each.

Next up for the 4th XI next weekend is to host Ipplepen CC 4th XI who could have Legend of  Cricketfield Road 1997. Steve Short in their side alongside his daughter, Flo.

Player of the Day

Losing the toss on a wet day seems so long ago now (and forgiven) so it goes to Harry Passenger for his 52 the 2 catches.

Spectator Watch

All the way from Australia, Neil(?) Latto who came to see Pop Latto’s bench along with his grandma.

Several of the 2s / 3s / 4s but by no enough means came to watch the 1s but some did put themselves to good use – Mike Etherington helping Katie with the Teas and Dan Western (along with Ed Smout-Cooper) went ball hunting thus scoring some brownie points with Evo – somewhat appropriate with Pop Latto’s widow present.  Evo though has to report certain committee members decided to head to Sandy Park before catching some cricket – Evo can’t deny though he wasn’t hoping the 1s would get called off so he could take his place on North Terrace B!
