devon cricket league 2026 - round 4 (updated)

1ST XI

The 1st XI played host to Bridstowe and Belstone CC 1st XI on a momentous day – not only Evo’s 700th consecutive league match scoring but also a start of a new era, Live Streaming of matches thanks to the efforts of Harry Baxendale.

TKCC won the toss and elected to bat.  One of the umpires presiding over the toss was from a foreign country – Luke Petherbridge who played in the celebratory match for Evo’s 50tth match lives where scones are jam first then the cream.

TKCC lost two early wickets, Ferndale and Thompson, before Pomare and Clifford repaired the damage, with the skipper, Passenger deciding to drop himself down the order   Clifford went for 26 while Pomare went onto to score a run a ball 106.  Once Clifford was out, he was supported by Smout Cooper with 43.  The best of the B&B bowlers was Devon bowler, Craig Penberthy with 4 for 52 as T&K reached 233 in their 50 overs.   One word of caution to the players, please make sure the covers are sufficiently pushed back from the boundary edge as Ricey doesn’t want to have to settle an insurance claim – he was already “moaning” about the cable for the new Live Streaming camera being a trip hazard!

The B&B reply despite some batters getting starts never really got going and was undoubtedly hampered by Shaquan Glasgow defecting the ball twice into his own wedding tackle and only scoring 30 – memories of Torquay v Sandford in 1996 for Evo.  As a result, B&B subsided to 121 all out in just 38 0vers with the best TKCC bowler being Will Begy with 3 for 27.  One thing for the players to take extremely seriously though when attempting a run out – if you hit the batter with the ball, it could become a Level 2 Disciplinary Offence!

Next up for the 1st XI next weekend is a trip down west to take on Ivybridge CC 1st XI.

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 1st XI                   233 for 9 (50 overs)

B Pomare                                                                     106

E Smout Cooper                                                        43

C Penberthy                                                                4-52

Bridestowe and Belstone CC 1st XI                      121 all out (38 overs)

S Glasgow                                                                     30

W Begy                                                                           3-27

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 1st XI (19 pts) beat Bridestowe and Belstone CC 1st XI (6 pts) by 112 Runs

2ND XI

The 2nd XI headed for what they hoped to be a nice day on The Moors to take on Chagford CC 1st XI on a ground once graced by Devon CCC, again under the leadership of Tim Western – sadly it wasn’t to be.

Chagford won the toss and elected to bat.  Chagford started well but then collapsed from 47 for 1 to 66 for 4.  However, their innings was built around a captain’s knock of 75 by Jake Griffiths and they reached 215 for 9 in their 45 overs.  The best of the TKCC bowlers was Tobias Delahunty with 3 for 35.

In reply with the exception of Faiz Ebrahim with 54 it was left to the Western family to score precisely half the TKCC runs but sadly it wasn’t enough as TKCC fell 31 runs short in their chase with 2 wickets remaining.  The star with the ball for Lewdown was Lucas Pedrochi with 5 for 25.  Pedrochi had already supported Griffiths with the bat have scored 30.

With yet more technical issues and no colleague, a message from Nick Ross for Sandra Western, “don’t have nightmares do sleep well.”

Next up for the 2nd XI next weekend is the reverse of the 1st XI fixture – hosting Ivybridge CC 2nd XI.

Chagford CC 1st XI                                                        215 for 9 (45 overs)

J Griffiths                                                                          75

T Delahunty                                                                     3-35

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 2nd XI                  184 for 8 (45 overs)

B Western                                                                         20 not out

L Pedrochi                                                                        5-25

Chagford CC 1st XI (18 pts) beat Torquay and KIngskerswell CC 2nd XI (8 pts) by 31 Runs

3RD XI

The 3rd XI played host to Barton CC 3rd XI.

Barton won the toss and elected to bat.  It was soon the Two Matt’s Show with Matt McCann rolling back the years taking 4 for 35 ably supported by Matt Rossin with 3 for 34 as Barton were all out for only 122 in just 30.4 overs.  Top scoring for Barton was their skipper, Andy Meredith with 32.  One other player of note for Barton was their super vet, Dave Cadwallader who scored 17, “Cads” was mentioned in Evo’s recently published multipart article.

In reply despite losing 5 wickets, TKCC reached the target at a canter in just 23.4 overs with Preshit Pawar top scoring with 55 before falling to Barton’s already mentioned “super vet.”  There was then a very quick-fire cameo from Matt Rossin – 21 not out with a strike rate of 175.  The best of the Barton bowlers Buddhike Konara with 2 for 17.

Next up for the 3rd XI next week end is a trip east to take on Kenn CC 2nd XI.

Barton CC 3rd XI                                                             122 all out (30.4 overs)

A Meredith                                                                       32

M McCann                                                                       4-35

M Rossin                                                                           3-34

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 3rd XI                   123 for 5 (23.4 overs)

P Pawar                                                                          55

M Rossin                                                                        21 not out

B Konara                                                                         2-17

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 3rd XI (20 pts) beat Barton CC 3rd XI (5 pts) by 5 Wickets

4TH XI

The 4th XI travelled to take on Lewdown CC 2nd under the leadership of Ethan Kulkarni and sadly a player light despite having so many players registered.

Lewdown won the toss and elected to bowl.  The only real contributors with the bat for TKCC were emergency wicketkeeper, Andrew Redpath with 41 not out and loan player Meerwais Dilsouz with 36.  TKCC were all out for just 117 for 28.4 overs.  The best of the Lewdown bowlers was Gavin Jordan with 3 for 8.

The Lewdown reply was built around 59 not out by Simon White helped by 27 extras.  Lewdown reached the target with just 3 wickets down in 31.2 overs.  No TKCC bowler took more than 1 wicket.

Next up for the 4th XI next weekend is hosting Stoke Gabriel CC 3rd XI.

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 4th XI                   117 all out (28.4 overs)

A Redpath                                                                         41 not out

M Dilsouz                                                                         36

G Jordan                                                                            3-8

Lewdown CC 2nd XI                                                      121 for 3 (31.2 overs)

S White                                                                              55 not out

Lewdown CC 2nd XI (20 pts) beat Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 4th XI (3 pts) by 7 Wickets

Player of the Day

For once it goes to an established 1st XI player, Ben Pomare for his century - hopefully the first of many.

Spectator Watch

It isn’t everyday you find an England international in your nets pre-match - well Sonny Baker will never forget his roots (10 years on from that young boy knocking in a ball for the 1st XI). Also on a day off from fishing there was a rare appearance, Matt Hunt.

EVO – THE CLUB SCORER (AND VERY MUCH MORE) AT 700 (PART 12 - THE CONCLUDING PART)

A unless fact - unknown to the players on two occasions over the couple of seasons, they have been watched by Don Shelley the Middlesex CCC 1st XI scorer, who Evo has previously worked with at The Home of Cricket.

Whilst not year specific travelling to Seaton CC to score always brings back memories for Evo of his 41 years, he served his community with St John Ambulance as he passes the field where he attended his first County Cadet Camp (and slept through a thunder storm – the only one in camp to do it).

What might be surprising to most though Evo’s finest achievement in his own eyes is away from the scorebox, although if anyone asked Di Kelmere she would have a very good idea what it would be.  The past year, Evo has formed a link between the club and Hollacombe Community Resource Centre off his own back – helping to rebuild his own life while most importantly  helping those less fortunate than himself.  From a light bulb moment one Friday evening in The Devon Dumpling to literally bouncing around his lounge – a photograph of his work having won an ECB competition, within just eight months.  He is now simply known by many of the clients (and staff) as “the Cricket Man.”

Likewise, Evo’s most emotional moment has also been away from the scorebox.  Raising money for Autistic After Hours a CIC which is very close to his heart as he continues a very personal journey and he thought he was going to be run out on £488. Evo was watching the Memorial Match for Pop Latto, who had been his legendary ball retriever (and the club’s number one supporter), on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of losing his mum, when the mum of one of the 1st XI gave him £12.  Evo freely admits he doesn’t know to this day how he held it together – members probably only need one guess who the mum was!

Whatever, the outcome of match 700 there will be a funny story attached to it.  Luke Petherbridge who appeared in, the match to celebrate Evo’s 500th match as a replacement for Matt Petherbridge AKA “Little Pethy” will be one of the umpires.  Within boundaries, Evo has been given permission from Luke’s parents, who will be travelling from their new home in a foreign country, well Cornwall, to give him some stick!

Will though the 2026 be a historic season for Evo?  Well, Evo has really been in the job to long.  With Tim Western likely to be in the 2nd XI all season, it will be the first season that no one in the 1st XI was born when Evo started scoring!  (Ironically another great left hander from this area, Nick Gaywood last played for Sheffield Collegiate CC 1st XI aged 52.)

As for the Holy Grail of 1000 League Matches – 16 August 2042.  Evo never thought the target was possible but when speaking to Dr Bruce Coleman the legendary Exeter CC scorer nearly a decade ago, who said he would have only need to be his age to achieve it, just got Evo thinking it is possible.  Rumours have it, after a chat at the wake for Mike Janes (father of Nigel Janes, Evo first 1st XI captain and who broke the news of Esme Kingdon’s resignation all those years ago) Shaun Needham has already been down the bookies to put money on it! Actually, Evo has said, “the Holy Grail as a result of the last few years is now my goal in life.”

Has Evo though ever really considered calling it time in the scorebox?  Evo reflecting on this said, “had JY not phoned me personally when the Yau Dynasty came to what many still see as a tragic end then quite possibly then and if his replacement hadn’t departed after a season then it would have be extremely likely then.”  (Had the 2025 season gone on much longer though would Evo have had the strength to continue that is a different scenario and but for a mum mentioned just a few times and Pasty’s better half – well let’s just say he freely admits he was totally broken.)

The one other big unanswerable answer for Evo though is, had Esme Kingdon not resigned would he still be scoring today having sacrificed so much of his life for the art of scoring.  The answer is probably, “No.”  Talking of sacrifice, Evo even turned down being an usher at a friend’s wedding on the day the 1st XI could only field 10 players even when the 2nd Xi had no fixture, if there was ever a time of “why bother” it was then!  Ironically it was away to Sidmouth CC – the same fixture 15 years later was the one he showed such commitment by scoring for it just 3 days after the failed resus attempt on his own father.

Equally though had there not been a prequal conversation back one dark May evening I 1986 to the one over the front fence would Evo had even ever started scoring?  How different his life might be today but for Colin Davey the 2nd XI skipper and John Kirby the Colts Manager (the latter being grandad of Beau [& Noah] Rider) who kept a failed cricketer active in the sport that night.  The two said gentlemen really have a lot to answer for!  A short addendum of stories from Evo’s days with the 2nd XI could always appear – apparently Hatherleigh CC would star, a lot, and you guessed one about North Devon CC!

It is only right though to finish this article with a stat for a stato – Evo is now 55 but has scored on 57 grounds (excluding 4 indoor venues) in Devon for various teams (dependent on Cullompton CC it could be 58 by the end of the season but now unlikely).  There may already be a 58th as for some reason Ottery St Mary CC rings a bell.  However, whether Evo will take up Steve Waters’ offer of doing the 3rd XI / 4th XI fixtures which are on a Sunday this year to boost his total we will have to wait and see – it would though only be one extra ground.  With some 1st XI league grounds in the South Devon area still to be added to his list. Evo has said, “if it had been Ashburton CC or Stokeignteignhead CC it would have been really tempting especially the latter as my next-door neighbour plays for their 2nd XI.”

That saying. as Evo is a fan of Strictly Come Dance though (and he has seen Karen Hardy and Mark Ramprakash dance) this article can only really be finished though with:

“Keep Scoring”

Much has changed though for Evo during the publication of this article as by the time Part 6 had its “scheduled” release, Evo had officially just been diagnosed with a life-long condition he had always suspected he had had – Autism.  It is only now though Evo feels he feels ready to go totally public with this.

EVO – THE CLUB SCORER (AND VERY MUCH MORE) AT 700 (PART 11 - GETTING TO AWAY MATCHES)

It is a tradition of the club that scorers don’t have to drive to away and for the most part it is a tradition which has continued all through Evo’s tenure as 1sr XI scorer.  Evo was particularly lucky in the early years as his “chauffeur” in the form of Nigel Janes lived literally next door.

Reflecting back the 1995 season was interesting.  Traditionally being a “short arse”, Evo would always sit in the back of the car.  However, 1995 was the first time he had really come across the Muslim Culture in an era well before EDI which is now a passion of his.  He travelled with Mohammad Amjad for most the season and despite Amjad having his wife with him, Evo would for one season only always be in the front seat.

However, for good stories look no further then Mike Pugh.  When Devon CCC first dropped The Rec as Minor Counties Championship ground, replaced by two one day matches, the chair at the time did his usual jump up and down, “this is so terrible.”  However, on one trip to East Devon that season, Evo can simply remember words of wisdom from Pughie, “you can make more money out of two one day matches.”   On two other trips to East Devon though, Pughie didn’t have such a good day.  On one occasion away to Sandford, he later faced the Court Marshall for getting Evo late to the match and on another occasion away to Budleigh Salterton, Evo returned on a low loader as Pughie had filled up with the wrong fuel.  Over the years Evo though has had some fast chauffeurs drive him around but the title of the fastest goes to Justin Yau’s wife to be, Natalie, in her sports car – Yauy actually earnest a lot of praise that day as knowing Evo was struggling as a result of the consequences of the North Devon “debacle” so a nice trip into Somerset for the Area T20 Finals in a sportscar and not having to try and fit in (which will be allured to later) was just what the doctor ordered.

Over the years though, Evo has driven himself occasionally to away matches.  His earliest memory was Paignton away – he left The Rec in light rain, a case of if it stopped there would be play, however by the time he had reached the Livermead Cliff Hotel, manhole covers were literally floating.  Another rainy story was away to Sandford in 2007.  In the car with him was Joe Crooks, Matt Thompson and Justin Yau but looking what he was driving into there was certainly no need to rush and by the outskirts of Crediton the rain was just bouncing off the car yet either Thommo or Yauy managed to sleep through it.  Apparently at 11am it had been as if the lights had just been turned out in Sandford – the bottom end nearest to the manor house was just like a swimming pool.  On the way back Yauy was actually useful from all accounts as he acted as Evo’s PA as Evo received a call inviting him to score for England CDA XI.    The following year Evo travelled solo to Sidmouth as he had split loyalties because of a close friend’s wedding.  The rain saved the 10-player 1st XI from certain defeat.  The race was now on to get to the wedding reception through the tail end of Devon County Show traffic – just 90 mins after leaving Sidmouth, Evo was at the Wedding Reception having not being able to book a taxi until he got home.  In 2011, Evo drove Mawgan Penrice down to take on Tavistock, and Evo said, “he always wanted to time himself on foot from home to the back gate at The Rec.”  Well Ali Imran Pasha did a demolition job so Evo got the chance to time himself – 14 mins 10 secs fast walking.

For Evo though his shortest away trip is actually nearer to home then The Rec – the club’s former home, Cricketfield Road and Evo reckons it is quicker to walk it then drive it!

EVO – THE CLUB SCORER (AND VERY MUCH MORE) AT 700 (PART 10 - 2024 TO 2026 [PRE-SEASON])

Match 666, the result for Evo was irrelevant but once again North Devon make the story with their connection with the late great umpire, David Shepherd – 6 * 111!  From all accounts if you need a photograph organised, call for young Lucy’s mum, Fiona.  On a more serious note, that day, Fiona said of Evo, “you are so diligent when it comes to safeguarding” – let’s just say Evo has conveniently had a prior engagement on occasions to prevent difficulties for the club at certain Memorial Matches.

Having made much mention of his parents, Evo had to make mention of Chris Kelmere jnr who will go down in history of the 1st XI after the merger – away to Hatherleigh CC in first match, Evo had to attribute virtually first for the new club to Chris jnr but Evo said, “no comment on the wheelchair incident though.”

As promised – the Chelsea Pensioner combo to get the Bridestowe CC overseas batter out in 2024, The total years was 103 (Vivek Kulkarni the bowler 52 and Tim Western the fielder 51).  Evo though will remember the game for finishing so early, sadly in a heavy defeat, being back in Torquay with the Red Arrows still in the air at the Torbay Airshow.

The return fixture was a case of in the words of Nick Ross, “don’t have nightmares do sleep well.”  Unfortunately, Evo did have a nightmare, “stop the game my laptop has frozen” – an unwanted first for Evo.   Bridestowe CC though were magnanimous in Evo’s apology for his meltdown especially when they realised what he was going through personally and what is going to be alluded to here very shortly.  That saying at the end of the fixture earlier in the season, Evo had shown the Spirit of Cricket, by giving TKCCs match ball to them to assist them in building up their collection of spare balls of the higher grade they now needed but as Evo said, “just don’t tell Ricey.”

After a hiatus of two decades the past winter saw Evo return to scoring Indoor Cricket.  Back in the mid-2000s, during the short-lived Gribble Era, spent many a Sunday at Ashmoor Leisure Centre.  This time it was at Paignton Academy with the Women and Girls so a new set of scoring rules for Evo to learn after all these years.  The one regret Evo had though he couldn’t do more of the games as he now has to set personal boundaries as he comes to understand his new life which will be allured too shortly.

1ST XI

The 1st XI travelled up north to take on North Devon CC 1st XI sadly minus the TBGS mini bus which travelling interesting and going through heavy rain at times it was a wonder there was going to be any play.

Rain meant the toss was delayed and as a result each side had lost 10 overs when North Devon won the toss and asked TKCC to have a bat.  TKCC got off to a disastrous losing Josh Thompson before he troubled the scorers.  North Devon old boy Joe Farndale (22) and Ben Pomare (48) repaired the early damage before North Devon’s skipper, Jack Moore, took 4 for 25, reducing TKCC to 89 for 5.  It was then left to Will Begy (43) and Ed Smout Cooper (36 not out) to rebuild the innings and TKCC finished on 191 for 6 in 40 overs – the last few overs being played in heavy drizzle.  During the innings there was the first Level 1 “bad boy” but fortunately for a TKCC player.  Play didn’t resume after tea and the match was Abandoned.

EVO – THE CLUB SCORER (AND VERY MUCH MORE) AT 700 (part 9 - 2020 to 2023)

Back in the dark days of Lockdown, Evo put a side of his favourite DCL opposition players and Match Officials based on character and respect:

1  Anthony Griffiths

2  Arnie Searle

3  Glenn Lammonby

4  Colin Mortimore

5  David Lye

6  Chris Read (WK)

7  Keith Donohue (Capt)

8  Dave Burke

9  Andy Procter

10 Ian Bishop

11 Adam Gribble

12 Mathew Theedom

Umpires Danny Daniels and Bob Elliott

Scorer Lynne Whitfield

The only change he reckons he might make now is Tom Lammonby replacing dad, Glenn.

As for a Club XI – it depends if you want Evo to name the Best XI or his Favourite XI as they would certainly be different.  Likewise, a best or favourite player – an impossible choice after all these years.

Logically with the real prospect of no cricket in 2020, because the ball was supposedly a “vector of disease” (a scoring colleague who works for NHS according to Evo subsequently just laughed at Boris’ comment), cricket club websites would just be dormant.  Clearly Evo didn’t read the law book, calling in favours from anywhere he could, the club’s website was very active.  As a result of this and other work in those extradentary times, Evo won a second OSCA for Devon but once again was unsuccessful at national level.

Shock news though Evo broke ECB Covid regs in 2021.  It was still a case of only one scorer could sit in the scorebox.  However, both scorers were consenting adults away to Abbotskerswell CC and his colleague came out with, “survive Covid but die of Pneumonia instead.”   Both scorers sat in the box and are still alive today even having de-masked as well!

Just after the regs changed there was a trip to you guessed it, North Devon CC.  While having breakfast on Instow seafront, a vet from Evo’s days with Animal Health came along.  “Hello Mr McCamley” with the response back, “no one calls me Mr McCamley these days.”  However, after a conversation later that day, it was discovered, young Lucy’s mum (see later) had been his secretary – you couldn’t make it up.

How to make Evo lazy?  Well just ask Steve Rider!  Mid way through 2021, “Rides” persuaded the committee to purchase a cable so Evo could directly operate the scoreboard from his laptop.  Evo being Evo though with his brain being wired differently, excuse the pun, disabled the overs function, to help keep his concentration.

It’s not every day Evo hands out gold medal but when Torquay travelled to take on Tavistock CC in 2021, Josh Hunt and Kesh Wijerathna took gold in pairs event for Sightscreen Surfing – the wind was so strong the sightscreen still move at a rate of knots even with them sat on it!

Nearly two decades are first being awarded it, in 2021, Evo received the Victor Tucker Salver again – one of very few people who have once it twice individually.

As the dreadful years of restrictions because of Covid drew to a close, Evo wants to make mention of the maturity and respect of an opposition colt at the pre-season friendly away to Ippleoen CC, a certain Warwick Green son of Marcus Green who played in the title winning sides of the mid-1990s.  How many 12-year-olds would ensure the scorers had cups of tea!

Actually, the Covid Years did do some good – collaboration with Barton CC.  Yes, you have heard that right!  Evo collaborated with their long-standing scorer, Chris Dove, over the introduction of Perspex screens in scoreboxes.

Having become involved in Player Registration, the one thing that has lad always made Evo’s blood boil – the none registration of colts who then as a result could slip away to other clubs unnoticed.  Well things had started to change in 2021 when he stamped his size 6s when he just told certain other key members he was going to register Josh Nott – within a month Josh had made his debut for the 2nd XI and just over a year later made his 1st XI debut.

Talking of the Nott family.  The following season having gone on so much about the issue of non-registration of colts, Bakes finally said, “just do it”.  One night Grandma Nott, with the school teacher coming out in her, had all the parents lined up and within an hour all eligible colts were signed up.  Evo managing the expectations of parents but by the end of the season only one hadn’t played in the DCL.

However, for Evo there will always be one “funny” one.  One Friday night in July 2023 Evo half-jokingly said to Ben Passenger his daughter should be registered for emergencies.  Little did he think just a week later Emily Passenger was being registered just weeks after her 14th birthday in the club’s hour of need!  The story doesn’t stop there though.  Next day, Evo was following Abbotskerswell CC 2nd XI v Torquay CC 2nd XI, when “Richard Harmer ct E Passenger b B Passenger 14” came up.  Evo at first thought it was someone having some fun until he realised the scorer for Abbotskerswell CC was a surgeon he knew.  According to older brother, Harry, she still mentions it now!

Returning to the Nott family the other story from 2023 which stands out for Evo was Hatherleigh away.  How many scorers have scored a 1st XI match with a grandad and grandson combination.  Well Evo has!  With player availability at an all-time low, Grandad Nott answered the SOS to block a hole in the field aged **.  Well super fit, even on a full stomach after having to make a dash from having just eaten a Full English Breakfast, isn’t the word – for the pre-season match at Winslade Park, he only rode his bicycle all the way to the match.  Actually, talking of that match, don’t tell Katie Needs, but Evo became Emergency Fixture Secretary just for an hour (no he doesn’t want the job).  Having lost the traditional pre-season match against Ipplepen CC because of the weather, Evo saw on FB while walking into Torre, that the University of Exeter had a ground, a team (3rd XI) but no opposition.  Within an hour a pre-season was arranged.  For Evo it was like coming home as DEFRA had been based there for many years.

After the “fun” wind story of 2021, 2023 saw an incident which left Evo with his heart in his mouth.  The wind at Budleigh Salterton’s new ground was so strong that Josh Nott, or should have that been “Josh Knot” was lucky not to be flattened by a sightscreen – solve the flooding issue and now have a problem with wind!  Although Evo does understand there is a fridge in their new Scorer’s Room for 0% Lager.

It is no secret that this decade things have been tough mentally / personally for Evo but even in tragedy there is a funny!  Just six days after losing his mum, he was back in the scorebox to ensure the club wouldn’t be deducted two points.  He had just been talking with Sue Tidball the Hatherleigh scorer about the Bovey Tracey match when a can of lager from a certain Mr Avery appeared in the box for after the match.  Sue by then could see Evo was struggling and came out with, “if drinking that can of lager get you through this game just drink it.  As long as you don’t have three double whiskies afterwards and I have to pick you up off the floor I don’t care.”  Evo has really come to appreciate the support he has received from his colleagues apart from Sue especially. Chrissie from Plymouth, Kate from Tavistock and young Lucy from North Devon – who scored with him during his darkest days.  Evo said though, “it would be wrong also not to mention a former colleague, who now concentrates on “granny” duties, Di Kelmere, for the amazing support she has given me.”   Actually, Evo went onto to say, “I must also mention the mum of Will’s one of the All Stars who has been so kind to me on the Friday nights.”

The last few years haven’t all been negative for Evo as is now Chief Blogger for the club website with Chris Kelmere snr providing so many good stories.  The one that sticks in Evo’s mind is, when Chris had to miss a “cricket day.”   A case of how dare they arrange my hip replacement operation for a Saturday!  As Evo said, “if members feed me material they know exactly where it will be appearing!”

EVO – THE CLUB SCORER (AND VERY MUCH MORE) AT 700 (part 8 - 2018 to 2019)

Evo over the years hasn’t been very lucky with ticking things off his bucket.  However, pre-merger in 2018 he achieved seeing all three League XIs in a day.  The 1st XI had a nice quick win away at Brixham CC, which meant the 2nd XI was at home but very conveniently the 3rd XI was playing at Torre Valley North – certain members post-merger has accepted Evo’s challenge of doing the quadruple and completed it!

As Sir Geoffery says, “catches win matches.”  Whilst it wasn’t the winning catch there is a catch that Evo remembers recording in a match against Budleigh Salterton in 2018.  The combined ages of the bowler and fielder who got Alex Richardson out for 44 was just 26.  The bowler was Harry Passenger and the fielder was Noah Rider.  (The Chelsea Pensioner end of the spectrum shall be mentioned later.)

We have had the music so it is now time to work in a bit of literature.  As a young girl, a certain Agatha Christie scored for the 1st XI and one of her books was “Murder in the Library.”  Well Evo once nearly wrote his own novel in 2019, “Murder in the Scorebox” having had a problematic afternoon at Queens Park.  On completion of the match the two quotes Evo remembers are from the then grandee of Paignton, Ken Sambrook, “I am so sorry” and from Geoff Read (father of Chris), “I could see you have had a difficult afternoon.”  Stopping off afterwards at the Baker’s residence, Evo even declined a glass of wine as the whole bottle would have easily disappeared.

As we all know, Evo is also famed for being the “Guardian of Match Balls”  and for the match ball to disappear into a kit bag is a sin die offence.  To this end Evo has three stories.  One match the year and opposition is irrelevant but it sticks in his mind as a certain Ian Baker marched straight off the pitch and gave him the ball.  On another occasion, the same match as Craig Overton pulling Evo a pint (see later), Craig’s twin brother, Jamie, came straight out the dressing room to give Evo the ball which he thought had actually been lost.  However, there was always the time when Sidmouth CC forgot to bring their match ball (or so they thought) to The Rec.  An SOS was sent home and an emergency ball appeared if by magic.  If by further magic though Sidmouth’s actual match ball appeared miraculously in the skipper’s kit bag after the match – if looks could kill Josh Bess would have killed the member of the Bess dynasty who had not been organised.

Being the “Guardian of the Balls” hasn’t always done Evo any favours.  Evo remembers one “flare up” with Tim Western which wasn’t his finest hour but what will be alluded to later, looking back now he probably understands the reason why for the “flare up.”

Evo certainly knew in the late 2010s which youngsters understood the value of balls and the need for decent spares – regarding the latter unlike an established 1st XI player who shall stay nameless.  One evening match he walked into the ground to be greeted by Blaise Baker aged just 9, “Evo fancy going looking for some balls” – it was roadside but Evo just looked at mum Jacky whose facial expression gave Evo all the confirmation he needed.  The same season so Sonny was all of 13 was asked by Evo, “are you going in the nets” the response was, “I can do” to which Evo replied, “fancy knocking this ball in for the 1st XI.”  Sonny’s eyes just lite up and half an hour later he returned, “is this how much you want it knocked in?”

Briefly returning to the Bess family though, without marriages / relationships. Evo reckons including his days scoring for the 2nd XI, he has scored for matches involving 7 of them – the most of any cricketing blood related family in Devon!

On the same theme, Evo loves to play The Generation Game, whilst Evo just yawns now  scoring for two generations of a family, three generations still excites Evo, sad I know.  The Wards’ from Paignton CC were the first and there have been four subsequently including two in the same night – the Parkers’ and Sheltons’ from Barton CC.  Whether Evo will ever get to four generations might be touch and go as the 3rd generations don’t seem keen on breading!

The only time the Mike Janes Memorial Match was played Cockington and Evo scored was 2018, and a young Sonny Baker failed to read the rule book.  It is an unwritten rule that any match Mike Pugh plays in he is first to thank the scorers.  On this occasion, Sonny forgot this and thanked Evo first!  Knowing how much Evo thought of Sonny for his maturity and respect, Phil Sturman turned around and simply said, “I see what you mean.”

This brings me onto the story of another famous father, Terry Townsend.  One day up at Heathcoat CC, Evo asked his colleague, “does Terry Townsend ever come these days” and the response was, “rarely.”  (Terry being the father of the late Graeme and Gareth, the former never let his disability get in the way of his involvement behind the scenes in cricket.)  Not five minutes had passed when Evo turned to his left and noticed a famously well-worn Surrey CCC t-shirt.  It could be only one person – yes, you guessed it, Terry!

With what will be alluded to in the last part of Evo’s memories – little things mean so much.  Whilst Evo got into “trouble” with Bakes for celebrating back in 2012, fast forward to 2019 and a night the Nations League Football was on.  Evo was clearly struggling and was sitting outside alone.  Bakes came along as a human being first a chairperson second and said, “Evo are you alright.”  Evo fudged his response but always remembers those few seconds. Evo has also always valued the support from the power behind the throne, Jacky, as well.  On one occasion though when they were discussing how Evo’s brain is wired, for once Sonny didn’t heed the famous expression of legendary rugby union referee, Tony Spreadbury, “go away.”

EVO – THE CLUB SCORER (AND VERY MUCH MORE) AT 700 (part 7 - 2014 to 2017)

Just a year later another tick on the bucket list was also missed by Evo – scoring for a match in the Premier League with a female player involved, For the two previous weeks, Andy Fairbairn the Bovey Tracey skipper had picked his better half, a former England test cricketer but then dropped her for the match against Torquay!  Evo does always wonder if Ellie Fielding, who in the club’s hour of need skippered the 2nd XI in 2008, before going up to Cambridge University and skippering their Women’s team, would have given him the tick on his bucket list if she had returned to the Bay.

2014 though will always be remembered though for Evo for the Celebratory Match for 500 League Matches (sadly Plymouth CC didn’t read the script the day before and beat Torquay CC in the 500th match) when he coined the phrase “younger legs” – basically some youngsters were selected so rolling substitute fielders could be used to save some of the those advancing in years such as Sam Wakeham, subbing for his dad Keith “Wally” Wakeham.  The four memories that stick in Evo’s mind was the respect from Adam Gribble who pulled out of a competitive match for Exeter CC (taking 4 wickets certainly made making him Player of the Match even easier) to play in the match, Justin Yau for keeping the secret of the Mystery Player (Des Kruger) even from his parents, Blaise Baker for giving his parents an early morning wake-up call as “I’m a mascot today” and finally raising “£500 for 500 matches” for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

There was for a brief moment a scary prequel to the match though, Evo got called by Bakes at work – heart in mouth was he about to lose a player and / or mascots for the match.  Evo need not fear, Bakes had been speaking to the star of Cricketfield Road 1997, Steve Short, who was “desperate to play” in the match.  Come final selection, Evo was actually glad Devon and Devon Lions both had matches which ruled out a few players – finding two squads of 15 was never a problem.

Evo’s trip to his spiritual home, Australia, in early 2015, has a few club related stories.  First up Evo got to see Mitch Pugh play in Sydney – will Mitch be the only club player Evo sees play club cricket on two different continents?  Evo can always remember Adelaide though – first up he heard his “Summer House” was going all mod as in electronic and secondly he got a message “Pethy is joining Torquay” to which he responded, “didn’t know we were staring a veterans team” – ok course it was actually Little Pethy who was joining and what an impact he soon had with his spin twin, Max Waller.  (There is also a third story from Adelaide but all Evo will say is”JFT97.”)

Finally, to win a DCL title without having to win the match.  The venue for this momentous match another Rec – this time Bovey Tracey’s.  Evo was in the box that for so many years had been the home of the legendary Harold Shaw – do well you get praised do badly and you got told.  He had been so respected by all.  To put this in perspective, when Bovey Tracey won the league back in 2002, it is the only time Evo has phoned a scorer to congratulate them.  By 2015 though their “new” scorer was a marmite character and let’s just say Evo isn’t a fan of marmite.  The plan was simple just win the league and then open a can of lager once it happened.  Evo having been following the North Devon CC v Sidmouth CC weather delayed match online, he can always remember his “confirm what I believe” text to Dave Petherbridge (dad of “Little Pethy” – explanation later) who came back with just one word “Champions.”    With enough points achieved – Evo restrained himself for a while but then couldn’t resist.  For once “Mr Marmite” apparently didn’t bit (unfortunately)!

Having mentioned Harold Shaw or as Mike Pugh would always say, “Mr Shaw Sir”, Evo couldn’t miss the opportunity of a good “clean” story about the late great Harold.  It actually goes all the way back to his first season with the 1st XI and a match away to Bovey Tracey.  Nigel Mountford the current CEO of Devon CCC was at the crease having never scored a league century for either club.  Nigel was on 96 and hit this ball to the boundary, Harold immediately shouted out “Well batted Nigel”.  Unfortunately, there is a blind spot for scorers at the ground and the ball had actually been stopped on the boundary!  It didn’t fortunately mate as Nigel soon was raising his bat to celebrate his century.

The following season, 2016, was really a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show.  However, progression in the ECB T20 Competition meant a first for Evo.  The only time he has scored for the club on foreign soil as Newport CC hosted the Area Finals actually in a unique scorebox.  Newport CC had pitches side by side so the score box was a first for Evo as it covered both squares being at an acute angle.

Whilst on the field it might have been disappointing off the field, new committee member, Evo, was on a mission to get a true club legend, Ken Jeffery, who had organised Evo’s Celebratory Match in 2015, the recognition he deserved.  Evo spent three months of his life preparing Ken’s nomination for BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero, off his own back and virtually single handily – even working on it while sailing out of Lisbon on P&O Britannia.  Ken who like Keith “Wally” Wakeham, Evo knew pre- cricket as he was the manager of the Lloyds Bank branch where his father had been first cashier, asked Evo afterwards was he disappointed with the outcome.  Evo responded with, “just to get you short listed, anything more would have been a bonus.”  It did though prove when Evo is on a mission, he is a totally different beast even restricting Yauy to just 50 words in the final citation.

Talking of the cruise on P&O Britannia.  Whilst on it, Evo got notified he had won the Outstanding Services to  Cricket Award (OSCA) for Devon in the Officiating which meant a trip to Lords although he didn’t win the National Award.  (Evo can’t possibly think how but Ken Jeffery had also been shortlisted for the Lifetime Achievement Award.)

Are yes, the “Ice Cream Match” against Cornwood CC at The Rec in 2017.  Cornwood alternate the 1st XI scorers and Lynne Whitfield scored for their 2nd XI the previous year at The Rec (Torquay’s 1st XI were playing at Queens Park) and found Evo’s refreshment supply!  The following season Lynne was going to do the 1st XI fixture at The Rec, and the message came on what turned out to be a very hot day, “any ice cream.”  Evo took this as a challenge, and ice cream was consumed during the afternoon in the box.  On the playing front, Mitchell Pugh had a rather goof day with bat and ball – let’s just say if Mitch had been playing for Cornwood, all you could have said was “well done.”  The icing on the cake for Mitch was that his father was over from Australia watching – certainly better than the previous season when he was over as the match against Exeter CC had little or no play.

North Devon certainly seems to be a recurring theme in Evo’s memories (he won’t comment on 2021 though).  However, 2017, despite being the day the 1st XI got relegated it was also the day a future England test cricketer served Evo a pint – again a certain Craig Overton who just days later was announced in The Ashes squad.

Early in the 2017 season though there were happier times with “that kick” by Henry Slade in the Premiership semi-final against Saracens.  The 1st XI was away to Exmouth CC 1st XI.  With time running out, Evo a Chiefs fan walked despondently back to the scorebox.  He tuned in on Radio Devon more in hope then expectation just as Henry Slade found the perfect touch with a 65m kick – the rest is history!

Staying on the rugby theme in 2017 there was the mad dash on a Saturday to a hotel at Twickenham.  Nothing to do with rugby but as a replay in the ECB T20 cup was needed as a result of an unclear ruling by the ECB – no comment.  It ended in a defeat for Torquay and Evo expected to have to return home and complete uploading the score from Saturday’s league match home to Exeter CC.  However, Evo could just put his feet up as Exeter’s secretary, Derek Taylor, had done it for him – the phone conversation went something like, “you have done us enough favours.”

DEVON CRICKET LEAGUE 2026 - ROUND 2

1ST XI

The 1st XI played host to Bovey Tracey CC 1st XI with no fewer then eight players making their home 1st XI league debuts for the “merged” club.  The number undoubtedly increased with both of Hazza’s previous loyal lieutenants confined to the sidelines – from all accounts Evo has just told Hazza who will be fulfilling the role in the interim.  Well, the response from Hazza was “I hadn’t thought about it but seems sensible.”

Prior to the match, Evo had a nice surprise – the spare ball from the AP Cup match was returned to him.  However, post-match his mood went rather downhill!

TKCC won the toss and decided to bat on what turned out to be a difficult track to bat on – all nine wickets which fell were caught!.  Many of the batters made starts but didn’t kick on with the exception of Jimmy Clifford with 63 and Will Begy with 42. TKCCx overseas player Ben Pomare on his girl friend’s birthday did though score 36.  The best of the BT bowlers was Albie Bradley with 4 for 59 – one proud mum in the scorebox.  The family dog just slept through it all – if all cricketers were as well behaved as him there would be need for the DCL to have a Disciplinary Officer!  TKCC finished on 230 for 9 in their 50 overs.

In reply BT got off to a reasonable start but just like TKCC many batters made starts but didn’t kick on with Harry Mount top scoring with 39.  BT certainly bat in depth – well with captain Seb Ansley (yes, he has a famous sister) coming in at no 8 scoring 23 before Jimmy Clifford taking a “Jonty Rhodes like catch” off Harry Passenger.  With the match still in the balance, step up James Tyler with 3 wickets in 4 balls to finish the match as BT were all out for 159 in just 37.4 overs – his figures being 4 for 31. He was well supported by Will Begy with 3 for 15.   However, before the next match many of the bowler’s radars  need a good service – 22 extras and all 22 being wides.

Next up for the 1st XI is their longest trip of the season to take on the early season table toppers, North Devon CC 1st Xi.

Finally, a question to the players.  How do you think the bench seats and the fielding discs found their way back into the pavilion after the match?

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 1st XI                   230 for 9 (50 Overs)

J Clifford                                                                      63

W Begy                                                                          42

A Bradley                                                                      4-59

Bovey Tracey CC 1st XI                                                159 all out (37.4 overs)

H Mount                                                                            39

J Tyler                                                                                 4-31

W Begy                                                                               3-15

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 1st XI (19 pts) beat Bovey Tracey CC 1st XI (7 pts) by 70 Runs

2ND XI

The 2nd XI made the shortest of away trip to the former home of Torquay CC – Cricketfield Road to take on Barton CC 2nd XI under the leadership of Tim Western with Ryan Hanauer opting to play rugby instead.

Barton were led by former Torquay CC 1st XI skipper, Tom Drake, and included half the “Needham Dynasty”, formerly of this parish.

Barton won the toss and elected to field.  In certainly wasn’t a day with the bat for the Western family – only 21 runs amongst the three of them.  A family who resides in the same road had a much better day with the bat though with Faiz Ebrahim scoring 114 not out which included 16 4s and 3 6s – lets hope there are no complaints from local residents of balls landing in their gardens.  Whilst Faiz’s son, Ethan, was only 4 not out, he was batting with dad when Faiz reached three figures – a proud moment for the family.  The best of the Barton bowlers was Harry Shelton with 2 for 71 (watched by grandad, Chris, who had been at The Rec earlier) as TKCC scored 245 for 7 in 45 overs.

In reply the only Barton batter to seriously contribute now he is not playing on one leg, Tom Drake, with 63.  The star with the ball for TKCC was Abu Bakar with the fab-ul-ous figures of 5 for 7 as Baron were all out for 151 in 40.3 overs.

Next up for the 2nd XI next Saturday is a home fixture when they host Plymstock CC 2nd XI.

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 2nd XI                  245 for 7 (45 overs)

F Ebrahin                                                                       114 not out

H Shelton                                                                      2-71

Barton CC 2nd XI                                                            151 all out (40.3 overs)

T Drake                                                                              63

A Bakar                                                                              5-7

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 2nd XI (20 pts) beat Barton CC 2nd XI (6 pts) by 94  Runs

3RD XI

The 3rd XI played host to Topsham St James CC 2nd XI at Kingskerswell in what turn out to be a runs feast!

TKCC won the toss and elected to field.  The Topsham St James innings was built around the 141 scored Howard Smalley.  He was supported though by Alex Davison with 50 and Andy Shields with 40 (thanks to broken radars Extras also scored a fifty with the help of 24 wides).  The best of the TKCC bowlers was Matt Rossin with 2 for 42 who by all accounts was hurting last night – maybe the idea of scoring is a good idea!  Topsham St James finished on 297 for 7 in just 40 overs – catch avoidance helping apparently!

In reply chasing the mammoth target, Chair of Cricket, Steve Waters, got it off to a good start with 55.  However, bating at no 5, it was then left to skipper, Mike Etherington, to keep the slender hopes of a victory alive with 77 not out.   Despite a fifty contributed by Extras. TKCC fell an agonising 10 runs short in the chase.  The best of the Topsham St James bowlers being Brian Jeary with 3 for 40.

Next up for the 3rd XI next Saturday is a trip to Cranbrook to take on Ottery St Mary CC 3rd XI.

Topsham St James CC 2nd XI                                   297 for 7 (40 overs)

H Smalley                                                                         141

A Davison                                                                         50

A Shields                                                                           40

M Rossin                                                                           2-42

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 3rd XI                   287 for 8 (40 overs)

M Etherington                                                             77 not out

S Waters                                                                       55

B Jeary                                                                         3-40

Topsham St James CC 2nd XI (19 pts) beat Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 3rd XI (8 pts) by 10 Runs

4TH XI

The 4th XI travelled the short distance to the former home of Torquay CC 3rd XI – Cockington (which actually hosted the last ever home match for the 2nd XI pre-merger) to take on St Marychurch Old Boys CC 1st XI.

SMOB won the toss and elected to bat and their innings was built around 70 from Kurt Dettman and once again Extras with another fifty 46 of then wides.  (Certainly, plenty of overtime for the club’s radar engineers this week!)   The best of the TKCC bowlers being Stephen Jones with 4 for 44 as SMOB amassed 190 for 7 in their 40 overs.

Sadly, TKCC subsided to 122 all out in just 31 overs.  The best of the batters being legendary master blaster, Phil Bradford, who rolled back the years with a run a ball 39.  As for the SMOB bowlers, the star was Shaun Molyneux with 4 for 23.

A special thank you must go to Balakrishnan Mallavarapu for agreeing to play as a loan player for the club.

Next up for the 4th XI next weekend is hosting Plymouth CC 4th XI skippered by the legendary Dave Burke.

St Marychurch OlbdBoys CC 1st XI                        190 for 7 (40 overs)

K Dettman                                                                        70

S Jones                                                                               4-44

Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 4th XI                   122 all out (31 overs)

P Bradford                                                                        39

S Molyneux                                                                      4-23

St Marychurch Old Boys CC 1st XI (19 pts) beat Torquay and Kingskerswell CC 4th XI (6 pts) by 68 Runs

Player of the Day

A really difficult choice between Abu Bakar, Faiz Ebrahim and James Tyler when on most days Will Begy and Jimmy Clifford would also have been candidates.  However, on this occasion it goes to James Tyler.

Spectator Watch

Mention must be made of Phil Sturman who had a day off from scoring for the 2nd XI.  Phil went from:

2nd XI – 1st XI – 2nd XI – 3rd XI – 4th XI – 1st XI – 2nd XI

aaron printers cup

The 1st XI travelled to Teignbridge to take on Abbotskerswell CC 1st XI under the leadership of Harry Baxendale (Harry Passanger as he “stars” for Devon CCC is ineligible).

Bax won the toss and asked Abbotskerswell to have a bat.  It was encouraging that Josh Thompson was fit enough to leaf the bowling attach with 1 for 7 off his 4 overs.  The most successful of the TKCC bowlers though was the ever-improving leg spinner, Bobby Western, with 2 for 18.  Abbotskerswell finished on 110 for 9 in their 20 overs with Brayden Notman top scoring with 33.

In reply TKCC got off to a quick fire start thanks to the trademark explosive hitting of Josh Thompson with 22 off just 13 balls.  When Josh was out it was left to Abbots old boy, Ed Smout Cooper to steer the ship home with an undefeated run a ball 38.  Despite losing 4 further wickets, TKCC reached “nelson” in just 16 overs,  The best of the Abbotskerswell bowlers being Alfie Harrison with 2 for 11.

Next up for the 1st XI is another trip to Teignbridge to take on Ipplepen CC 1st XI although there is potentially a fly in the ointment.

Finally, Evo would like to say a huge thank you to Phil Sturman for stepping into score and for Susie acting as Bax’s PA.  Evo regrets not being able to fulfil his normal roles but for once is his life he had a personal matter to attend to which had to take priority even over cricket.  Please therefore under no circumstances push Evo on this as he will reveal when he feels ready.
